CITCOF SAN BERNARDIO - REQUEO FOR COUNCIL ACT~N
APPROVAL OF $6,000 FROM PARK EXTENSION
FUNDS FOR PURCHASE OF FISH FOR STOCKING STAFF REPORT
SECCOMBE LAKE.
Prior to the closing of Seccombe Lake Park for rehabilitation of the lake
and redevelopment of the Park, Park Extension funds had been used to purchase
fish for stocking the lake. The fish plantings bought with City funds were
in addition to those the State Fish hatcheries provided, usually twice each
year.
Prior to opening the lake to fishing in June, 1987, the State provided
approximately three (3) tons of Catfish which were planted at the end of
April and the first week of May. The State provides fish only two times per
year - in the Spring and late Fall, usually in April-May and October-November
time frames.
Fishing in Seccombe Lake not only provides exceptional recreation experiences
for all ages, it also provides food for many of our citizens. Fishing at the
Lake is consistently one of most used used recreation resources in the City
with people fishing every day. It is estimated that there are 40,000-45,000
fishermen at Seccombe Lake annually.
Because of the large number of individuals fishing at Seccombe Lake, twice per
year fish planting is not sufficient to meet the demand. Therefore, it is
recommended and requested that funds in the amount of $6,000 be approved to
provide two additional fish plantings this year of approximately one ton of
fish each planting.
