HomeMy WebLinkAboutS09-Council Office ~ . o o o o 1 RESOLUTION NO. 2 RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO ENDORSING THE PASSAGE OF THE CALIFORNIA DESERT 3 PROTECTION ACT AND URGING THE CALIFORNIA CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATION TO SUPPORT THE ACT. 4 BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY 5 OF SAN BERNARDINO AS FOLLOWS: 6 WHEREAS, U.S. Senator Alan Cranston, Representative Mel 7 Levine and 23 co-sponsors from the California Congressional 8 delegation have introduced the California Desert Protection Act 9 into the United States Congress, as S.ll and H.R. 780;and 10 WHEREAS, the passage of the California Desert Protection 11 Act would provide important protection for environmentally 12 significant, federally owned public lands, by including them 13 within the National Park System and National Wilderness 14 Preservation System; and 15 WHEREAS, the purposes of S.ll and H.R. 780 are to preserve 16 the unrivaled scenic, geologic, and wildlife values associated 17 with the unique natural landscapes of the California desert; and 18 to perpetuate in their natural state the significant and diverse 19 ecosystems of the desert; and to preserve historical and cultural 20 values of the desert associated with ancient Indian cultures; and 21 WHEREAS, these bills, in addition, would provide ample 22 opportunities for compatible outdoor public recreation and would 23 promote understanding and appreciation of the California desert; 24 and 25 WHEREAS, the current California Desert Protection Act has 26 been revised in response to previous opposition, to maintain 27 / / / 28 DAB:br July 17, 1989 1 ~Q y/ , o o o o 1 multiple uses in certain areas for military, public utility, 2 industrial, Native American, and grazing needs; to phase out 3 grazing activities as leases expire; and to facilitate land 4 exchanges outside of park and wilderness areas to protect private 5 land and mineral interests; and 6 WHEREAS, Senator Cranston stated to the Congress his 7 intent, during the legislative process, to review the need for 8 additional vehicular access to address the outstanding concerns 9 of off-road vehicle and other recreational users; and 10 WHEREAS, the residents of the City of San Bernardino, as 11 citizens of California and as visitors to the California desert, 12 have a deep interest in protecting the irreplaceable resources of 13 our public heritage lands. 14 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT HEREBY ORDERED AND RESOLVED that the 15 Mayor and Common Council endorse the passage of the California 16 Desert Protection Act and urge the California Congressional 17 delegation to support the Act. 18 I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was duly 19 adopted by the Mayor and Common Council of the City of San 20 Bernardino at a meeting thereof, held on the 21 day of , 1989, by the fOllowing vote, to wit: 22 AYES: Council Members 23 24 25 26 27 28 NAYS: ABSENT: City Clerk DAB:br July 17, 1989 2 Q 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 27 28 RESOLUTION - OF THE CITY OF PASS~E OF THE ACT.U SAN BERNARDINO ENDORSING THE CALJ~ORNIA DESERT PROTECTION '--I.) o of , 1989.
