CI'IC OF SAN BERNARDIO - RIEQUEGI' FOR COUNCIL AC'Q)N
STAFF REPORT
On July 1, 1988, the minimum wage in the state of California
will increase from $3.35/hour to $4.25/hour. The City of San
Bernardino is not required to adopt the new minimum wage as
public agencies are not legally bound by the state minimum
wage laws.
Mayor wilcox has requested that the City implement a $4.25
minimum wage effective July 1, 1988. Staff concurs that it
is desirable to do so to remain competitive with private
employers who must pay that minimum wage. The Council
Personnel Committee agreed at its June 9 meeting to recommend
that the city implement a $4.25/hour minimum wage effective
July 4, 1988, the start of first payperiod of July. The
money for this increase have been included in the proposed
1988-89 city budget.
In addition, Parks, Recreation and Community services Dir-
ector Annie Ramos has recommended that the job titles "Youth
Service Aide I and II" be deleted from the part-time salary
resolution. This is due to budget constraints and the avail-
ability of youth employment service through our Employment
Representative at Wests ide Drop-in Center, SBETA, County
services and the School District.
