For over25 years the San Bernardino YMCA's have been selling Christmas Tre~
in the Community. The purpose of the project Is to raise money to support
current programs and for the development of new programs. This project Is,
Itself, a major YMCA program which uUllzes over 300 volunteers ranging from
hIgh school students to men's and women's servIce club members as well as members
of our San BernardIno CommunIty.
In 1984 the ChrIstmas Tree project was In jeopardy due to the loss of both of
our locations, Del Rosa and Highland due to construction, and Alpha Beta on
40th because they wanted to seil theIr own trees. The program was saved by
the CIty In allowing us to use both the Perrls Hill ParkIng lot next to Flscaiinl
Field & Wildwood parking lot (southwest corner). In exchange for the use of
the property, the YMCA got Involved In the CIty's beautification project at
two locations determined by cIty council. The first location Is Roesch Unes
where they put up a block wall. The second location Is the Downtown YMCA
where $2,000 In landscaping has aiready been done and another $15,000 of work
has been planned (Rod iron fence arol.J'ld the YMCA to replace chain link, decorative
concrete around trees, along sidewalk and the addItion of more trees).

Because of the continual construction In San Bernardino, It has been very
difficult for the YMCA to find new locations. Our move last year tlJrt the project.
Regular customers were not able to find us. We feel that If we move again the
movIng cost and people not being able to find us will again hurt the program.
The YMCA Is requesting the use of Perrls HIlI parkIng lot and the Wildwood parkIng
lot for our locations again this year.
The Parks Commission was not In favor of this proposal. They did not want to
set a precedent of allowing groups to sell products on clty property. The use
of cIty property for business ventures Is already beIng done however. There are
several money makIng projects exIsting on cIty property. They are:

1) The Little League concession stands.
2) The Junior University - charging admission to plays (Ampa Theatre)
3) The newly built remote control car track which charges membership fees.
4) The Arts & Crafts venders that sell their paintings and handcrafts every
weekend at Perrls HIli on the corner of Valencia and Highland.
The YMCA has been serving the San Bernardino area for over 102 years. We
have earned the respect of the community by running quality programs and getting
out In the community to raise money through projects such as Christmas Trees.
A few of these events are listed below:
1) San Bernardino Marathon 5K, IOK, Half/Full Marathon (January)
2) Sustaining Drive (February-March)
3) Fun Run, 51<, 101< (June)
4) Pancake Breakfast (November)
5) Raquetball Tournament (September)
6) Christmas Trees (November and December)
7) Christmas Parade (December)
Last year we constructed $1,200 In electrical and water hook ups to make the
lots easier on the city personnel to hook up electrical and water supplies. We
agreed to pay $100 per lot In utilities and do Beautification Projects l.4) to $2,000.
Dnce again, we are willing to assist the City In any area they may wish us to
become Involved In. We need your help or this project will die.
