STAFF REPORT
Approved in the Animal Control Department 84/85 Budget was a proposed
program to vaccinate most all dogs and cats received at the City
Shelter with vaccines to assist in reducing the spread and incidents
of common but serious diseases. It was estimated we would vaccinate
10,800 dogs and 5,500 cats during the fiscal year at a cost of
approximately $18,000. In order to assure the program would be self
supporting, we estimated that 30% of all impounded dogs (3,240) are
either reclaimed by their owners; adopted to new homes, or sold to
research. Approximately 20% of all cats (990) leave the Shelter
alive similarly.
The adoption of a $5.00 vaccination fee for all dogs and cats reclaimed
by their owners, adopted to a new home or sold for research purposes,
would support the cost of the program. It is estimated a $5.00
vaccination fee would generate $21,000 annually.
