U I Council Notes: 7s-G262 AlI8nda Item Noh:- - . CI10 OF SAN BERNARDIQ) - REQUOr FOR COUNCIL AC'CoN STAFF REPORT Since 1975 the Business License Division of the City Clerk's Office has employed two full time business license inspectors. During this time the number of business licenses issued has increased by 58% from 6,690 to 10,600. At the same time the geographical area of San Bernardino has grown by four square miles. In order to accommodate the increasing workload for the business license inspectors, we have consistantly streamlined and refined operating procedures to preclude the addition of personnel in the above mentioned classification. However, we now conclude that a point has been reached where the two current business license inspectors cannot keep up with the licensing activity, and as a result, a significant amount of business license revenue may be going uncollected. Therefore, we are proposing a pilot program to determine if an additional license inspector position can be supported in the 1985-86 budget. The pilot program would be implemented and moni- tored similar to that of the recently successful business license audit program. An additional license inspector would be hired temporarily for a period of six months working forty hours per week. The pay rate would be $7.6788 which is commensurate with the A step of business license inspectors. The cost of the total pilot program including the use of a used city vehicle would be $8,700.00. It is estimated that additional revenue of $36,000.00 could be generated by the pilot program. 75-0264
