Mayor Evlyn Wilcox &
Members of the CamDn Council
San Bernardino City Hall
300 North "0" Street
San Bernardino, CA 92418
Dear EVlyn:
The Board of Directors of the San Bernardino Area Chamber of Catmerce at their
March 18, 1988 voted unanimously to oppose Measure A, the proposed formation
of Ibjave County on the June 7, 1988 ballot.
In addition to opposing this measure the Board further approved a recannen-
dation fran the Chamber's Governmental Affairs Carmittee that our organization
take a pro-active, leadership role in defeating Measure A,
We would like to formally request that the Chamber be scheduled on the City
Council's agenda as soon as possible to discuss Measure A and to officially
ask the Ci ty of San Bernardino to go on record CWOSing the proposed creation
of Ibjave County. The Chamber also will be requesting that the City of San
Bernardino join with us in working to defeat Measure A.
Here are just a few of the reasons why the Chamber opposes Measure A:
1, San Bernardino County will be reduced from the largest county in area in
the United States to the second snallest in Southern California. This in
turn will greatly hanper the county's image and our efforts to market and
pranote this comm.mity.
2. The proposed Mojave County will take 90 percent of the masSl 17 percent of
the population, and 19,95 percent of the assessed value, That value would
have brought in prqx:>rty taxes to pay for debts on buildings which were
planned to serve the entire area.
3. San Bernardino County will be giving the desert area just as it is
beginning to pay its own way. It is an area of enormous growth potential
and possibilities for the future,
