BARRETT STlNSOWThe Sun FALL CLEANING? V olunteers take to streets By MARIA c. HUNT Sun Staff Writer SAN BERNARDINO - Thirteen-year- old Justin Carter and his family got a new house Saturday without even leaving home. A platoon of volunteers armed with brushes, buckets ofpaiot and a huge dump. ster descended early in the morning on the Carter house at 1195 W. Fifth St. When they were done, the house had a fresh coat of white paint with blue trim, and the 30-cubic- yard dumpster was fuH of debris. "It's better than what it was," said Car- ter, who was dressed in a paint-streaked shirt. "I just hope my bus driver doesn't pass up the house." The effort was part of Neighborhood Pride Day, co-sponsored by the San Bernar- dino VaHey Association of Realtors and the San Bernardino Neighborhood Housing Services. Realtors, insurance agents, utility work. ers, college students and even some reputed rival gang members came together to paint out grafitti and puH weeds on the 16th Street bridge and refurbish 16 homes near 'It's better than what It was. I Just hope my bus driver doesn't pass up the house.' . JUSTIN CARTER Boy whose house was fixed up Roosevelt Elementary School. Members of the Mariachi Lucero strolled the neighborhood, serenading vol- unteers as they worked. Karen Schwartzkopf, communications chairwoman for the Realtors' board, spent much of the morning painting a house on I7th Street. "The houses we're painting were the ones that needed painting on the street and they didn't have the money to do it," she said. "It catches on because neighbors see the work being done, and before you know it, they're painting their houses too," Leonard Davenport, 50, NHS commu- nity relations chairman, sent scouts to find houses that needed work and find out what colors the families liked. Four hundred gal- for cleanup Ions of paint, ladders and tools and land- scaping plants were donated by local busi~ nesses. Mattie Cole watched from the sidewalk as volunteers finished the blue trim on the Carter house. Cole's Tenth Street home re- ceived a paint job, landscaping, and a new tool shed last year from the agency. "It wasjnst beautiful and it was more than I could have afforded,'. said Cole. 57, who was somewhat skeptical ofthe volun- teers' intentions last year. "I thought it was too good to be true that someone would do that much work for nothing." Michael Ponce of the housing services agency thanked the volunteers for helping change the face of the neighborhood as they gathered for a lunch of chile verde, rice, beans and tortillas. While many groups try improve housing conditions by loaning money or building low-income dwellings, Ponce, 39, said NHS takes a broader approach. "Our goal is to positively change those neighborhoods," he said. "We can build af- fordable housing to kingdom come, but if you don't tend to the health of the neighbor- hoods, then it's a wasted effort." ) (b~ .tf- ~ "",-~'1 TED RIOS ;;';4 Youth worker . ...;:~ Ted Rios. 16, of San Bernar-4 dino died of a. gunshot wound , Monday in San Bernardino. <j Rios, a lifelong resident of ' San Bernardino, was a commuc :.1 nity youth worker for Los Padri-' nos under the youtH Coalition.:__ "-'::om He'ts ' survIved .~ by his wife, " Roberta; a. j SOil, Ted,!!
