HomeMy WebLinkAbout12638 I .~~ 1 RESOLUTION NO. /~~3Y 2 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF Sfu~ BERNARDINO PROTESTING THE PRACTICE OF THE DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES OF SELLING THE NAMES 3 fu~D ADDRESSES OF CITIZENS UPON REQUEST TO fu~Y INDIVIDUAL OR COM- PANY SO REQUESTING fu~D URGING REPEAL OF THE LAW AUTHORIZING THIS 4 PRACTICE. 5 WHEREAS, all citizens of the State of California have a I right to privacy and security in their homes; and 7 WHEREAS, the Department of Motor Vehicles is authorized by 6 8 Vehicle Code Section 1810 to sell information from its records 9 concerning the registration of any motor vehicle, including the 10 name and address of the registrant; and 11 WHEREAS, the Department of Motor Vehicles does sell such 12 information; and 13 WHEREAS, criminals use such information in selecting 14 victims for rape and robbery; and 15 WHEREAS, such information may also be used to find the home 16 address of police officers, subjecting them to harassment and 17 possible threats; and 18 WHEREAS, such information is used by advertisers for 19 dissemination of unsolicited junk mail to all citizens; and 20 WHEREAS, no discernible public purpose is served by the 21 sale of such information; and 22 WHEREAS, this practice results in an invasion of the 23 privacy of the citizens of the City of San Bernardino and all 24 citizens of the State of California, 25 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ~lliYOR AND C01~~ON 26 COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SN~ BERNARDINO AS FOLLOWS: 27 SECTION 1. That on behalf of the citizens of the City of 28 San Bernardino, the Mayor and Common Council object to the 1 practice described in this resolution and request its termination. 2 SECTION 2. That the Mayor be authorized to send to 3 Governor Edmund G.
