STAFF REPORT
Handicapped ramps are required by State law in connection with
construction of new curb and gutter. However, there are many
intersections throughout the city that were built before this
requirement was im~osed, and consequently do not have
facilities for the handicapped.
The absence of ramps can force handicapped persons to travel
within the roadway, until they reach a driveway approach that
provides access to the sidewalk. This exposes them to injury
from vehicular traffic.
Ramps will be constructed at about l6 locations under this
project. These ramps will allow handicapped persons to travel
on the sidewalk and to avoid prolonged periods of travel in the
street.
We recommend that a finding be made that installation of these
handicapped ramps is needed for health and safety reasons.
