STAFF REPORT
Engineering Dfvi sian was requested to study and reduce traffic
congestions at the intersection of Fifth Street and Mayfield
Avenue.
Mayfield Avenue is a short two-way street between 5th and 6th
Streets forming a "T" intersection at each end. The street has
a substandard curb width of 26 feet, therefore, parking is
prohibited along the West side with two-hour parlcing allowed
along the East side. . The major users of Mayfield Avenue
includes the Downtown Post Office and office buildings fronting
5th and 6th Streets.
A questionnaire survey was conducted to seek inputs from local
property owners and tenants. Forty letters were sent out, 22
responded. The results indicate that over 50 percent
(including Post Office) were in favor of converting the
Mayfield Avenue to a one-way street North. 14 percent preferred
a one-way street South, and the remaining 36 percent preferred
no change.
This matter was discussed at the Mayor's Traffic Safety
Advi sory .Commi ttee. Converti ng to a one-way street North, wi 11
result in the least impact to existing users and provide
substantial relief to traffic congestion at the 5th Street
intersection. The Committee recommends that Mayfield Avenue be
converted to a one-way street North between 5th and 6th
S tree ts.
