CITY OF SAN BERNAR.Q.O - REQUEST FOROoUNCIL ACTION
STAFF REPORT
since May, 1991, the city of San Bernardino Police Department
has been operating the Junior Police Academy at Lytle Creek
Elementary School. The Academy, made up of fifth and sixth
graders, is an all-day program which covers physical fitness,
law enforcement training and public service administration.
To encourage these young people to continue to lead
responsible lives and choose a law enforcement career with
the City of San Bernardino, it is recommended that the City
sign an agreement with each Junior Academy graduate to pay
the student $1,000 upon employment as a sworn officer with
the San Bernardino Police Department. Employment must be
accomplished prior to his/her twenty-fifth birthday, and an
original, signed agreement must be presented within sixty
days of employment. '
Since it is likely that only a few of Academy students will
actually complete the agreement's requirements and the
administrative costs to track such a small account would be
high, it is recommended that funds not be set aside to
finance this action and assume that the Mayor and Common
Council will honor this debt at that time.
