!Q:MORANDUM
To Ken Henderson, Development Department,"
Qect Grant for Sound System at Sturges Center
From Norman Baffrey, Sturges
Date June II, 1991
Approved
Date
...
cO
,) Of the three bids submitted for the proposed sound system at Sturges
Center for the Fine Arts, I have discussed and dissected each one of them
carefully and have chosen Matty Sound Systems as the best bid.
Because of the inadequacies of the original system, my assistant,
Harald Luther, and I have discussed our problems with many of the users of
the faCility and examined systems used in other local facilities, such as
FontAna Performing Arts Center, Landis Auditorium, California Theater of
Performing Arts, etc.
The Matty system incorporates many amenities we require for a fully
functional system. He is a local contractor and also the material_
supplier. He plans to use Altec/Lansing equipment. Altec/Lansing is a
company with a 50-year track record of superior quality. He will be fully
responsible for equipment, design, shop fabrication, installation and
performance. The loud speakers alone carry a 5-year warranty. His
proposal contains detailed drawings and specifics, expecially designed for
this facility. Many pieces of equipment are more expensive than other
proposals and discounted by him.
Other proposals are created for material supply plus a separate
contractor.
Mr. Matty has deSigned and built successful systems for the S.B. City
Council Chambers, the Redevelopment Agency, the MIC Room, Civil Service, as
well as Clark Auditorium in Redlands and Colton High School. He supplied
the original portable sound system for Roosevelt Bowl and has consistently
proven himself as a responsible, quality sound engineer.
We are quite pleased with the entire system as deSigned by Mr. Matty
and feel it will fill all our needs. Additionally, he includes plans for
future options, should we decide to make additions or changes.

Dear Mr. Henderson:
The Sturqes Center sound system qrant application, submitted
on July 1st, 1990, was termed ineleqible but, due to the
endeavors of your office, an alternate fundinq source was
obtained with unrestrictive fundinq.
The proposed vendors' bids have been carefully reviewed and
are as follows:
o
CUSTOM WORKS ENGINEERING , Upland, California :
$8,429.00, which is an incomplete bid.
FRONTIER LILGHTING, Riverside, California :
$51,387.67. Too hiqh for the services rendered.
FILAMENT PRO AUDIO , San Dimas, California :
$29,554.00. Althouqh quality equipment the system is not as
desireable for the needs of the Sturqes Center.
MATTY SOUND SYSTEM , San Bernardino, California :
$38,716.00. This is the choice as it is top of the line,
custom desiqned for the facilities specific requirements and
includes optional extra features to qive the best total sound
system.
The Directors of the Sturqes Foundation are most appreciative
