C~ OF SAN BERNARD&>o - REQUM FOR COUNCIL ACT~
STAFF REPORT
On 02-17-89, this office received a request from the Traffic Section of the
Engineering Department to change the name of Washington Avenue between
Cynthia Street and Walnut Drive to Washington Street. The purpose for this
change is to help provide continuity in street names in the City, as the
street between Pine and Chestnut Avenues, which aligns with the sUbject
street is presently called Washington Street. Currently, we have three
Washington Avenues in the City of San Bernardino - all in different areas of
town, consequently, in an emergency it can be very confusing to personnel
trying to locate "Washington Avenue".
On 03-13-89, the Real Property Section of the Public Works llepartment was
authori zed and di rected to proceed wi th the proposed street name change from
Washington Avenue to Washington Street.
On 04-03-89, City Departments were notified of the proposed name change, (see
attached list), and given an opportunity to coinment on the proposal. No
objections were received, however, the police and Fire Departments are
concerned that there are two other streets named "Washington Avenue", both of
which are located South of Highland Avenue. Both departments stressed the
need to weed out the repea ted names and help provi de some conti nui ty and
logic in the nami ng of streets in San Bernardi no (see attached letter from
Police Department).
Ten homeowners wi 11 be affected by this street name change. Each homeowner
received a letter explaining why the name change was proposed. We have not
received any phone calls or letters protesting the change.
Staff recommends the changing of Washington Avenue to Washington Street.

Re: File No.: 15.01A-039
After a review of the proposed name change I found that we currently have three
roads named Washington in San Bernardino, They are:
Washington Avenue located between Chestnut and Cynthia in the Verdemont area.
Washington Avenue located between California and Macy south of Highland Ave.
Washington Avenue located between Central Ave. and Dumas St. west of Waterman ave.
There is already confusion as it relates to public safety responses. Your
proposal only renames a portion of the Washington Ave. located in the Verdemont
area. In order to avoid further confusion in the future, I recommend that the
entire roadway of Washington Ave be renamed from Cynthia Street all the way to
Chestnut rather than stopping at Walnut.
The problem is that if we just rename the proposed portion, we then will have
three Washington Avenues and ~ Washington Street.
I would further propose a change of Washington Ave. from Central Ave. to Dumas
St. to be renamed Washington Road. .
We then would then have three distinctive street names in order to avoid future
confusion.
Submitted for your consideration,
