(' ....,. - . . r> /" 7; / I- A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO IN SUPPORT OF DESIGNATING THE SAN BERNARDINO HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM THE JAMES K. GUTHRIE AUDITORIUM WHEREAS, James K. Guthrie studied music and was a proficient instrumentalist, and from the age of 16, became a conductor at San Bernardino High School when their music instructor became ill; and WHEREAS, he started conducting the Redlands Bowl Orchestra at the age of 17 and has become an internationally- known and respected opera and symphony orchestra conductor; and WHEREAS, in 1930 he founded the Philharmonic Orchestra of the San Bernardino Valley; was the first conductor of the San Bernardino Civic Light Opera and introduced the Broadway star, John Raitt to the Inland Empire while conducting the University of, Redlands Orchestra; and ' WHEREAS, Mr. Guthrie has been conductor for such stars as Judy Garland, Jack Benny, Bob Hope, Van Cliburn and Ronald Reagan as well as conductor for the NBC television weekly symPhonic broadcast series sponsored by Standard Oil; and WHEREAS, He ha's brought some of the most distinguished singers to the San Bernardino area such as John Raitt, Brian SUllivan, Leontine Price, Howard Keel, George London and Jean Fenn, NOW, THEREFORE, THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL REQUEST THE SAN BERNARDINO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF TRUSTEES DESIGNATE THE SAN BERNARDINO HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM AS THE JAMES K. GUTHRIE AUDITORIUM in honor of a man who has dedicated many years of service to the City of San Bernardino and has brought musical entertainment and enjoyment to countless generations of community residents, and who has contributed to enhancing the quality of life for the citizens of San Bernardino by providing musical programs for all to enjoy.
