Agenda Item No /7
CiT~ OF SAN BERN~DINO - REQUEST FOe COUNCIL ACTION
STAFF REPORT
~
During the excavation for the installation of the new
backbone utilities, it was discovered that many of the existing
gate shutoff valves were in poor condition. When these valves
were exercised, they would ei ther leak or the valve stem would
break off entirely. The Contractor was asked to quote a price to
rehabilitate these valves. During the investigation, it was
determined that the parts necessary to repair the valves could
not be located. Additionally, many of the valves were in such
poor condition that they could not be repaired.
~
The Contractor was asked to provide a cost estimate for
the replacement of the existing valves. This quote was from
$920.00 for a 4-inch gate valve up to $1,388.00 for a 10-inch
gate valve. The Water Department wa contacted and has reviewed
the price quotes received from the Co tractor and stated that the
prices were fair and reasonable for t e amount of work to be per-
formed.

additional work. Funds to finance t increase of $60,000.00 in
the contract price, from $4,523,299.8 to $4,583,299.87, will be
provided from the following sources:

NAME OF PROJECT:
NORTON AIR FORCE BASE STREET IMPROVEMENTS
OWNER:
CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO
CONTRACTOR:
MATICH CORPORATION
The followinq chanqes are hereby made to the CONTRACT DOCUMENTS:
Replacement of the existinq water qate valves located
throuqhout the project area, the qate valves vary in sizes from 4
to 10 inches.
Justification:
While installinq the new utilities on Tippecanoe, "C" Street
and 6th Street, the existinq water qate valves were found to be in
poor condition. When the contractor tried to exercise the valves
by shuttinq them off and turninq them on aqain, the stem of the
valves would either brake off or the valve seats would start to
leak. The contractor was asked to provide a quote to repair the
valves, however, it was determined that the replacement parts were
not available, additionally, many of the valves were hiqhly
corroded and could not be serviced. Therefore, it was determined
that the best action was to replace the valves while there was easy
access to the valves.
This work would most probably have to be performed in the near
future anyway, and it is far more reasonable to replace these
defective valves at this time, further, if the valves are left in
place there is a potential problem with the water leaks and the
undermininq of the new street pavement.
