RESEARCH :
1978-79, an experimental study of 9th grade students using sentence
c:x:rrbining root.hods. I found a significant inprovem:nt in students I
descriptive writing using the sentence a:rrbining rrethexi over
traditional methods of tEBching writing.

1988-89, a study of three methods of teaching literacy to adults in
the san BeJ::narclino Libraries. Metb::Xls includerl language experience
using a \\Qrd processor, phonics using a \\Ork1:x:x:>k, and whole-\\Ord
using a softw:rre package. Data was statistically analyzerl and
revealerl no significant differences between groups. Results were
presenterl in a Faculty lecture series at CSUSB en April 16, 1990.
winter. 1990, a study to analyze differences between traditional
teaching of writing and use of the cx:xrputer to teach writing to 8th
graders for 8 weeks. Re3!ling levels, writing develcprent and
attitudes were maasurerl pre- and post -experirrent.
Fall. 1991-Spring. 1993, a study of pre- and post-treatment gains in
reading level and in attitudes of secandaIy students being tutorerl
in the Student Literacy Cbrps program ftmderl by U.S. Dept. of
Etlucatian. 'lbe study uses a CUlture Free self-perceptien inventory
and an Infonral Reading Inventory administererl by trainerl tutors
superviserl by the grant director.
