CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
STAFF REPORT
Subiect:
Authorization to install 2-way stop at the intersection of Birch Street and Rexford Street.
Backl!round:
The Traffic Engineering Section received a request from a citizen to install a 4-way stop at the
intersection of Rexford Street and Birch Street. The requestor claims that several accidents
have occurred at this intersection that could have been prevented if a 4-way stop were in place.
Traffic Engineering Staff evaluated the request. This intersection is currently uncontrolled. It
is located in an entirely residential area but Rialto High School is located approximately two
blocks south of the intersection. Consequently, there is a substantive amount of pedestrian
traffic in the area. There are also dips across the north and south legs of the intersection.
Traffic volumes are too low to justify a 4-way stop. However, there is limited visibility at the
intersection due to block walls that were constructed on the southwest and southeast corners of
the intersections. Due to the limited visibility created by the block walls, staff recommends
that the intersection be controlled by a 2-way stop.
Although the intersecting streets carry approximately the same amount of traffic
(approximately 600 vehicles per day), staff recommends that Rexford Street Stop for Birch
Street (north and southbound traffic). North and southbound traffic will yield to east
westbound traffic. This is consistent with the cross dips that currently exist across the north
and south legs of the intersection and the observed driver perception at the intersection.
Financial ImDact:
The estimated cost of $ 500.00 for installing the new stop signs will come from Account No.

Recommendation:
Adopt Resolution.
