Dear Mr. Geiger:
The City of San Bernardino Department of Public Services is applying for
an Urban Forestry Grant under the California Wildlife, Coastal and Park
Land Conservation Bond Act of 1988 in the amount of six thousand sixty
two dollars and forty four cents ($6,862.44).
This grant will be used to plant a total of two hundred and forty nine
( 249 ) drought and smog resistant trees along Waterman Avenue in San
Bernardino. We plan to do this planting in two phases: phase one will
be planted from 30th Street to 40th Street: the second phase will be
planted from 40th Street to Old Arrowhead Road.
These trees will be planted in the parkway approximately forty (40) feet
apart, distance may vary due to driveways, utility poles, etc.
This is a high maintenance area for the City of San Bernardino which is
currently planted with Oleanders that are an ongoing maintenance problem
for the city. They continually crowd out the traffic lanes and
sidewalks requiring frequent triJIIDing. Waterman Avenue is a very busy
major artery in San Bernardino and these shrubs often cause a visual
obstruction for traffic on cross streets attE!llt'ting to enter Waterman
Avenue.
We intend to plant one hundred twenty five (125) fifteen (15) gallon
Golden Rain trees that will be approximately six (6) feet tall and one
hundred twenty four (124) Silver Dollar Eucalyptus trees with the same
proportions. We will be using four hundred ninety eight Lodge Poles and
eighteen (18) inch cinch ties to tie and stake them with.
Our costs we have projected for this includes $1,187.73 for the purchase
of materials not covered by the Grant: $1,728.00 for the use of in-house
equipment: $5,760.00 for labor of the City Tree Crew. We will replace
these trees on an as needed basis should any not survive the initial
planting.

URBAN FORESTRY GRANT PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The planting of Golden Rain and Silver Dollar Eucalyptus trees on
Waterman Avenue in San Bernardino will improve traffic visibility and
beautify the area. This will also serve to reduce maintenance costs as
this is a continuing problem for the city.
We plan to remove the existing shrubbery, hazardous trees and debris
along the parkway in this area to ready it for planting. 'l'hese trees
will be hand planted using double stakes and cinch ties.
Our Street Tree Crew will begin planting on Noverrber 1, 1989 and they
expect to have both phases completed by Decerrber 1, 1989. They will be
planting the Golden Rain and Silver Dollar Eucalyptustr_s ~t -the. rear __
of residences property lines. The homeowners in the area will be
informed of this project and we will be requesting their cooperation in
informing our department if any vandalism occurs. We will also be
asking them to help us in the maintenance of these trees by providing
occasic:mal__watering. _ 1ncluded in this packet you will find~~,,:l'- ~c.::'~_.::...:.-=-- _.
form:l~:1:hat -.will be sent to the property- _~~intlria-projeet~-~~-~--_._~
area should this Grant be approved.

- --- ~-_._-----_._-
MAINTENANCE PLAN -
~~.---
..:.~_........-
We will water these trees twice a week during the hot and dry weather
and one time a week thereafter until the roots are established, which
should take approximately two (2) years. Pruning will be done
approximately every six (6) month for the first three (3') years,
thereafter on an as needed basis.
They will be fertilized with Vitamin Bl upon planting and along with
soil preparation should be sufficient.
These trees will be monitored and sprayed with insecticides as necessary
for disease, insects, etc. The City of San Bernardino Public Services
Street Trees Division will be responsible for all maintenance of trees
purchased for this project.

Giving it deep watering at least once each day during the next six months
by filling the basin around the tree. This will supplement the watering
during the first year after planting. Later, a soaking once every three to
four weeks will be sufficient. During extremely hot weather more water
may be required.
Cautioning children not to damage trees.
Keeping tree tied to stake, or call the Street Tree Division when it needs to
be retied.
Watching for damaging insects, disease (curling leaves, dead limbs) and
broken limbs on trees. When you notice them, call the Street Tree Division.
