Interstate 215 5th Street Bridge Project
San Bernardino Associated Governments, Caltrans, the Federal Highway Administration and the
City of San Bernardino are widening Interstate 215 between Interstate 10 and Route 30 to meet
traffic demands through this area. Originally built in 1959, Interstate 215 is marl?ed by serious traffic
congestion, especially during peal? moming and afternoon commute hours. The first stage of the
freeway widening project is the reconstruction of the 5th Street bridge.
Project Highlights
A new bridge will be built at 5th Street with two travel lanes and two left-turn lanes in both direc-
tions, plus a sidewall? on the north side of the street. Once the freeway is widened, the new bridge
will feature an on-ramp and off-ramp directly on 5th Street. The left-hand, fast-lane entrance on
4th Street will be eliminated; the 6th Street off-ramp also will be removed.
What to Expect during Construction
· In most cases, the 5thStreet bridge will remain open to drivers. Some temporary night closures
will be required.
· The current 4th Street on-ramp will be closed for approximately six months, lil?ely in late 2008.
During that time, motorists may use on-ramps at 2nd Street or Baseline.
· Efforts will be made to not affect freeway travel lanes during the bridge construction. About 30
instances of full freeway closures will be needed at night, and drivers will use H Street as a
detour route. The closures will span several consecutive nights.
· Nearby streets and the intersections at H Street and J Street will be raised several feet. This will
require detours on Hand J Streets.
Timing
Worl? on the 5th Street bridge is expected to last between early 2007 and mid-2009.
Funding
The total cost of the 5th Street Bridge project is estimated to be $23 million and will be financed by
a combination of state funds and Measure I, the voter-approved half-cent sales tax for transporta-
tion improvements in San Bernardino County.
