SUBJECT
Reassignment of the Technology Librarian from the General bargaining group to the Mid-
Management bargaining group.
BACKGROUND
The classification of Technology Librarian is currently in the General bargaining group; as such,
positions within this classification do not have supervisorial roles. The Technology Librarian is
similar to the Senior Librarian in that both require special expertise, training, knowledge and
education. In addition, both supervise staff ranging from six to ten employees. As a result, a
change in bargaining groups is necessary in order reflect the similarities of these two
classifications.
FINANCIAL IMPACT
The salary range and current salary of the Technology Librarian will not change. The cost of the
reassignment is as follows:

The annual cost for the reassignment in bargaining groups will be $1,740 the difference will be
taken out of the Library Department salaries for Temporary/Part-Time Account No. 105-471-
5014.
RECOMMENDATION
1. Reassign the Technology Librarian from the General Unit to the Mid-Management Unit.
2. Direct the Human Resources Department to reassign the Technology Librarian from the
General Unit to the Mid-Management Unit.
3. Direct the Finance Department to transfer $1,740 from Account No. 105-471-5014

Class specifications are intended to present a descriptive list of the range of duties performed by employees in the
class. Specifications are !!!!J. intended to reflect all duties performed within the job.
SUMMARY DESCRIPTION
Under direction, assists in the organization and implementation of the Library's teclmology plan including
maintenance, expansion and evolution of computer systems in the City library system; perfonns basic
Windows NT administration functions; assists with the management and selection of electronic
information sources; and performs related work as required.
ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
The class of Technology Librarian is an advanced journey-level professional class in the professional
librarian series. Supervision is received from the Library Director of designee. fucumbents work a varied
schedule which includes "on-call" assignments.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
The following duties are typical for positions in this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these
duties and/or may perform similar related duties not listed here:
I. Provides courteous and expeditious customer service to the general public and City department staffs.
2. Serves as a technical resource person for the library; assists patrons and staff with computer
operations; performs minor troubleshooting of computers, printers and other hardware; may install
and update software and CD-ROMs.
3. Performs basic Windows NT administration functions; participates in the management and selection
of electronic information resources.
4. Conducts extensive individual and group training for staff and public on futernet, CD-ROM databases
and software programs; assists in creating and maintaining library web page; advises on policies and
procedures for electronic information services.
5. May contribute in the preparation of library grant proposals; attends professional conferences and
workshops; keeps current with professional reading to maintain professional growth.
6. Routinely adheres to and maintains a positive attitude towards City and Department goals.
7. Performs related work as required.
GENERAL OUALIFICATIONS
Knowledl!e of:
Electronic information sources, microcomputer hardware, software and LAN's Z39.5 Protocol,
Novell Netware, Windows, Windows NT, HTML, TCP/IP and various futemet protocols such as
FfP and Telnet;
Public library reference sources and service;
Extensive use of futemet and various software applications including word processing, spreadsheet,
database, graphics, presentation and other software;
Methods and techniques of training.

Ability to:
Perform professional tasks in the area of library technology development consistent with local needs;
Make extensive use of the Internet and utilize various software applications;
Create Web pages or programs that can create Web pages;
Perform minor troubleshooting of computers, printers and other hardware;
Prepare hand outs and materials for use in training and presentations;
Read and interpret complex written materials;
Understand and carry out oral and written instructions;
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing;
Establish and maintain effective relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
Minimum Oualifications:
Master's degree in library science and three years of advanced level professional library experience.

print, computer screens and other printed documents.
