Subiect:
Authorization to install 2-way stop at the intersection of Pershing A venue and 201h Street.
Backl!I"ound:
The Traffic Engineering Section received a request from Councilperson Susan Lien to evaluate
the intersection of Pershing A venue and 201h Street to determine if stop signs were warranted.
Traffic Engineering Staff evaluated the request. This is an uncontrolled intersection in an
entirely residential area. All the other intersections in the inunediate vicinity are controlled by
stop signs. No major visibility problems were observed at the intersection.
There are dips across the east and west legs of the intersection. Gouge marks were observed on
the pavement, at the dips, indicating that motorists are having trouble negotiating them. There
are no "Dip" warning signs. The dips can be driven comfortably at a speed of fifteen (15)
m.p.h.
The following are traffic volumes taken on the approaches to the intersection:

Although traffic volumes are very low, staff recommends that the intersection be controlled by
stop signs. This will make this intersection consistent with all the other intersections that are
already controlled within this area. Even though the volumes are approximately equal, staff
recommends that east and westbound traffic stop, as this will also help mitigate driving
difficulties associated with the dips on the east and westbound approaches to the intersection.
The traffic Safety Committee evaluated this issue at their October 16, 2002 meeting. The
Committee concurred with the recommendation of staff and therefore recommended that stop
signs be installed on the east and westbound approaches to the intersection.
Financial Impact:
The estimated cost of $ 500.00 for installing the new stop signs will come from Account No.
001-187-5111 (Signing and Striping Materials)
