COUNCIL ACTION ~THORIZATION FOR OUT-OF-STATE STAFF REPORT VEL FOR SENIOR COMPANION OGRAM COORDINATOR TO ATTEND THE 1991 NATIONAL SCP CONFERENCE IN WASHINGTON, D.C. The Senior Companion Program Coordinator, Betty Lewison, has been invited to attend the National Senior Companion Program Conference in Washington, D.C. during the period April 8-12, 1991. This will be a most productive conference for our Coordinator as it will give access to those serving in Senior Companion Programs nationwide. Expenses of this program will be borne by the Maryland, Center on Aging through an ACTION attached ACTION letter, dated January 23, 1991) It is recommended that this out-of-state travel be approved. January 23, 1991 Dear Senior Companion Project Director: ACTION, In conjunction with the University of Maryland, Center on Aging, Is pleased to announce plans for the 1991 National Senior Companion Program Conference. The theme for this event will be "The Senior Companion Program: Taking the Lead In an Aging Society". All SCP directors are invited to attend this conference scheduled: I'f\~~'l f>-;a,,'i April SUi (1 :00 PM") to April 12th (12 noon), 1991 Washington Plaza Hotel Massachusetts & Vermont Avenues, N.W. Washington, D.C. 20005. e (* All veteran directors should arrive at the hotel In time for this 1:00 PM start. Allow at least ORe (1) hour travel time from the airport to the Plaza Hote!.) All new directors, I.e., those hired since the 1990 TAOS regional conferences, should arrive on Sunday (417) In anticipation of a special orientation starting at 9:00 AM on Monday (4/8]). ACTION Is especially fortunate to have the University of Maryland, Center on Aging, as the c0- sponsor of this conference. Its gerontological expertise will add to what we plan to be a significant training event for Senior Companion Project directors. The following information is important for you to know as you plan for your attendance. Please read It carefully and respond accordingly. 1 _ Through an ACTION grant, the University of Maryland will pay for your travel to attend this conference. Consequently, no local grant money will be spent for your attendance. However, you must personally contact the University's travel agency, "Travel-On" to make your own reserva- tions. Its hours are 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM (EST); its toll free. number: 1-S00-333-1225. "I . . e In order for us to obtain most favorable travel rates, some of you may be asked to consider arriving In Washington on the Saturday before the conference OR staying over the Saturday alter. Travel- 01 's agent will work out the arrangements that are In the best Interest of all parties concerned. 2- Hotel costs related to this conference will also be paid for through the University but you will need to make your own reservations by completing and returning the enclosed reservation card to the Washington Plaza Hotel. Please note the .cut-off date. of March 8, 1991. 3- The UniversIty's per diem for Washington, D.C. Is as follows: up to $10 for breakfast; $10 for lunch and $21 for dinner. You will be responsible for costs exceeding these limits. The University will not allow any reimbursement for alcoholic beverages. In order to be reimbursed for your meals (and other costs, such as: mileage to and from your local airport, subway, parking, porters. taxi and business related phone calls) you must keep all receipts, sending the orlglnats to the University when you submit your voucher. On the final morning of the conference, there will be a special session on completing your voucher with ample opportunity for questions. This letter is the first of several that will be sent to you during the next two months regarding the conference and your participation in It.
