CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION STAFF REPORT SUBJECT: Approval of Plans and authorization to advertise for bids - Installation of handicapped ramps in various locations per Plan No. 9793. BACKGROUND: Installation of handicapped ramps along various streets has been programmed for the last several years. The proposed ramps follow the adopted policy for installation in that they cover public facilities, schools, retail areas, and places of public accommodation in a set order. The CDBG application provided for $50,000 for construction. This is the first set of ramps and reflects those that do not require additional right-of-way and/or relocation of major facilities. The remaining locations for the priority list are being designed and will be ready in the near future. However, they do require additional work for right-of-way and/or relocation of existing improvements. The Memorandum of Understanding was completed and approval given to begin design March 17, 1998. This portion of the project represents construction of approximately 40 ramps; plans are now complete and we are ready to advertise for bids. Listed below are the estimated construction costs based on the Engineer's Estimate of construction: Subtotal $20,000 3.000 $23,000 Construction Contract Engineering and Inspection Contingencies (3.6 %) $ 2.000 Total Fmimated Cost $25,000 FINANCIAL IMPACT: Funding for the installation of handicapped ramps at various locations is found in the Community Development Block Grant Projects Fund under Account No. 97-233 in the amount of $50,000. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends approval of the plan and that the Acting Director of Public Works be authorized to begin advertising for bids on the installation of handicapped ramps in various locations.
