CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
STAFF REPORT
Sub;ect:
Authorization to instaJl a 4-way stop at the intersection of Guthrie Street at Sunrise Lane.
Background:
The Traffic Engineering Section received a request to install a 4-way stop at the intersection of
Guthrie Street and Sunrise Lane. The request was received through a petition from the Arden
Guthrie Home Owner's Association. The neighborhood group feels that instaJlation of a 4-way stop
at this intersection would enhance traffic safety in their neighborhood.
The Traffic Engineering Section of Development Services evaluated the request utilizing the
Administrative Policy for Stop Sign Installation. Both, Guthrie Street and Sunrise Lane are
classified as local residential streets.
Pursuant to that evaluation, staff has determined that this intersection meets Warrant "B" of the
Administrative Policy. This warrant is satisfied when sixty (60) percent of the residents located
within six-hundred (600) feet of the proposed stop sign, sign a petition agreeing to its
instaJlation, and two other criteria are met. In this case criteria B-1 and B-2 are met (see attached
warrants).
Since this intersection meets Warrant "B" of the Administrative Policy for InstaJlation of Stop
Signs, staff recommends that the instaJlation of a 4-way stop at the intersection of Guthrie Street
and Sunrise Lane be approved.
The attached Resolution contains a correction as foJlowing: There are currently stop signs on aJl
of the approaches to the streets that intersect Guthrie Street between Pacific Street and Highland
Avenue. These stop signs were either instaJled under Resolution 2482 (Stop Intersections) or
while these roads were still under the jurisdiction of the County. For consistency, it is
recommended that they be included in this Resolution.
Financial Impact:
The estimated cost of$ 500.00 for instaJling the new stop signs will come from Account No. 001-
187-5111 (Signing and Striping Materials)
Recommendation:
Adopt Resolution.
