DESCRIPTION) Flnlncl: Council Notls: n-Olll Agendl Item No. '1 ~.1 -' ; CITY OF SAN BERrRDINO - REQUEST.OR COUNCIL ACTION STAFF REPORT For over a year, the Animal Advisory Commission has been exploring the use of microchips for use in companion animals in response to numerous requests from residents to provide such service. In April 1993, the Commission chose the InfoPet National Animal Identifications and Recovery System. The InfoPet System is based on a small and permanent implantable microchip about the size and shape of a grain of rice. Each and every animal arriving at our shelter - whether alive or dead - will be scanned with either a hand held scanner or a walk-by scanner (sometimes both). The pet can immediately be reunited with its owner by tracing the unique identification code through our records or InfoPet's National Registry. Quickly reuniting lost pets with their owners reduces housing costs and increases revenues through redemptions. The Animal Advisory Commission is committed to developing programs to reunite lost pets with their owners. InfoPet's electronic identification system is an easy and permanent program to attain that goal. After reviewing other microchip companies, the Commission feels that InfoPet is the best choice to provide not only a high quality product, but excellent service and responsiveness to our needs. All animals adopted from the animal shelter will be implanted; the fee for each implant is $ 8.00 at the time of adoption. other residents who wish to voluntarily have their animals implanted may do so for a fee of $ 18.00 per animal. Staff will have special clinics periodically to meet the demand of implanting for the public. The pet owner may also voluntarily register their animal with the national database for $ 30.00 (lifetime). For each registration, the department receives an additional $ 5.00. This program will provide an estimated $ 20,000.00 in additional revenue. 75.0264
