CITY. OF .SAN BERNA.INO - REQUEST FOaCOUNCIL ACTION
STAFF REPORT
The Traffic Engineering Section has been notified by the
Public Services Department that they will resurface Sierra Way,
between 30th Street and 34th Street, in the near future. The
Traffic Engineering Section will take advantage of this action to
install a continuous left-turn lane within this area. This will
eliminate the need for the peak-hour "No Parking" zones. We are,
therefore, recommending that these zones be removed.
Since similar action was implemented successfully, along
the southerly section of Sierra Way, we recommend that the same
striping pattern be implemented along this section.
Last year, similar action was recommended and implemented
on Sierra Way between Base Line Street and Highland Avenue. This
was in response to area residents' complaints about unsafe
passing on the right. Installation of the continuous left-turn
lane narrowed the through lanes, thereby discouraging motorists
from passing on the right. Consequently, it also eliminated the
need for the peak hour no parking zones.
The peak hour "No Parking" zones were originally installed
in 1965 to encourage the use of Sierra Way as a two lane road
during peak periods, southbound in the morning, and northbound in
the evening. However, this arrangement has resul ted in
uncontrolled traffic movements which has generated complaints
from abutting residents.
We recommend that the parking prOhibitions on Sierra Way,
between 30th Street and 34th Street, be deleted.
