Fire Department Evaluations of Obstructed Bedroom Windows and Public
Education

This Department has performed the following special details since the San Anselmo tragedy on
July 28, 2003:
. August 1 - August 15, 2003: Conducted 16 responses/evaluations of bedroom windows
within the City of San Bernardino. The following actions were taken during these
evaluations:
_ Removal of 14 obstructions during these responses. Obstructions included painted windows,
window bars, and furniture placed at bedroom windows.
Five smoke detectors were issued during these evaluations.
One Order to Evacuate was issued. All bedroom windows of the dwelling were not open able
from inside with bars installed on the exterior.
Confiscated propane heating and lighting equipment within a residential dwelling, this
dwelling also had five bedroom windows obstructed with window bars. Fire suppression
crews removed/cut five window bars during response.
. August 1 - August 15, 2003: Public Education included fire prevention and suppression
personnel attending two special events - August, 4, 2003, Perris Hill Park/Cluster
Neighborhood Association, and on August 9, 2003, Lincoln Elementary SchoollDMV
Neighborhood Cluster Association. The Fire Department issued pamphlets on smoke
detectors and bedroom window safety. Smoke detectors were available at both programs.
. July 28 - August 15. 2003: Fire Department's smoke detector program issued 77 smoke
detectors. Twenty-three were installed by fire department personnel, who also installed 17
batteries. A total of 56 batteries were gi ven to residents.
