CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Staff Report
Subject:
Resolution of the City of San Bernardino authorizing the renewal of the existing maintenance
contract for Police and Fire Mobile Data Computers (MDCs) with Motorola Corporation of
Riverside, California.
Background:
The City of San Bernardino operates 141 Motorola MW520 Mobile Data Computers (MDCs).
The Police Department uses 125 of these devices in black-and-white patrol vehicles. The Fire
Department uses 16 of these devices in front-line suppression apparatus.
Because of the complex nature of these mobile, specialized computers, only Motorola can
maintain them, without voiding the factory warranties.
Motorola has presented the City with an offer to extend warranty service on these devices for a
fixed monthly price of $16.53 per month, per device. For this price, Motorola will cover all
shipping costs to and from the repair depot and all repairs that are not the result of abuse or
misuse.
The County of San Bernardino's 800 MHz Group is unable to provide complete warranty service
on these devices because of the complex computerization of these devices. As part of our
regular contract with the County 800 MHz Group, they will continue to support minor repairs
associated with these devices at a discounted rate.
There was no price change from Fiscal 2000/2001 or Fiscal200l/2002 on this item. There was
an increase of about 2% in Fiscal 2002/2003. This year, Motorola increased the monthly fee by
1 percent ($0.16 per month, per device). This contract will cover the entire fiscal year.
Financial Impact:
Police MDC Used in black-and- 125 @ $16.53 ea. per $ 24,795.00
Maintenance white patrol vehicles mo.
Fire MDC Used in front-line 16 @ $16.53 ea. per $ 3,173.76
Maintenance suppression apparatus mo.
TOTAL $ 27,968.76
The annual cost for MDC maintenance for fiscal year 2003/2004 is $27,968.76. These costs are
included in I.S. chargebacks to Police and Fire, and will be budgeted in I.S. account #679-252-
5172.
Recommendation:
Adopt resolution.
