Father Juan Cahalleria, /902 from Hi~t011J of San Bernardino Valle\' . History Indians originally occupied the San Bernardino Valley. Two of the major documented tribes in the early 1800s were the Serra- nos and the Cahuilla Indians. Existing evidence indicates that Indian tribes may have dwelled in the San Bernardino Valley for more than 4000 years. Hikers can still take a trip to the Lake Arrowhead area and explore the Indian mortars at a site called Rock Camp. Missionary - From 1819 to 1821 San Bernardino went through a Mis- sionary period. The area was actually an outpost for the San Gabriel Mis- sion. During this time missionaries established a rancho, and later an Asistencia Mission where local Indian tribes were encouraged to come to learn how to plant and irrigate crops. Today, a reconstructed version of the original Asistencia is located on Bar- ton Road in Red lands. Indian vaqueros inhabited the San Bernardino Valley during the ~ ti Discover -iC': major gold rush. Holcomb Val- ley was one of the largest gold findings in Southern California. Miners poured into the moun- tains through San Bernardino in search of their fortune. For a time, Belleville, a mining town in Holcomb Valley, was the largest city in Southern Califor- nia with 10,000 residents. To-this day the main gold "vein" has yet to be discovered. The Valley remains much the same today and gold is still found by "week- end miners" who make the trek with their pans and equipment. Rail - The railroads made their arrival to San Bernardino in the 1880s. San Bernardino was changed from a sleepy town to an enterprising city. In 1883 the Southern Pacific arrived in Colton, and in 1885, the Santa Fe completed its line through the Cajon Pass into the city itself. By the 1890s San Bernardino was becoming an important trade Ranchero era from 1942 to 1951. Life on the rancheros revolved around the raising of cattle. Accounts of life on the Spanish ranchos stress hospitality of the people, fiestas and rodeos. The Mormons - A Mormon contingent of 500 settled in San Bernardino in 1851. Three years later in 1854, the city was officially incorporated. The population at that time was 1200 including 900 Mormons. In 1857 approximately sixty percent of the Mormons were called back to Utah by Brigham Young. Gold! In 1860 William F. Hol- comb filed five gold claims in an area now known as Holcomb Val- ley. Holcomb's claim resulted in a The Arrowhead. a natural landmark. Courtesy San Bernardino RDA PAGE 4 . ...0 San Bernardino's Heritage House Museum center and railroad town. History buffs would enjoy a visit to San Bernardino's History Walk, locat- ed at Seccombe Lake Park. Prominent people and significant events are commemorated on thirty bronze plaques along a lovely brick walkway. And for those Route 66 fans, don't miss the curious Wigwam Motel on the north side of Foothill Boulevard, one of the remaining relics of the 66 era. San Bernardino was made quite famous by all of the excitement of the "Mother Road". The Route still exists and passes through the city on its way to Santa Monica where it ends. Attractions & Activities San Bernardino County Regional Parks operates eleven different recre- ational facilities. You'll find everything from hiking, fishing and camping to horseback riding. One of the parks is home to the famous Calico Ghost i~ Town where remnants of mining days of old California can still be seen. Take a tour and explore "Maggie's Mining Company" and "Hank's Hotel". The town is home to a variety of unique gift shops and restaurants. From the late 1920s until WWII San Bernardino was known as the preview capitol of the world for major Holly- wood production "sneak previews". Many famed Hollywood stars includ- ing Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Joan Crawford and Jean Harlow are known to have attended the previews. The California Theatre of Performing Arts was one of the venues for such show- ings. Today the California Theatre still stands in all of its glory. Originally opened in 1928, the theatre is now maintained and operated by the San Bernardino Civic Light Opera Associa- tion, whose star-studded Broadway plays and musicals light up the stage for thousands of guests each year. One of the most famous attractions in the Inland Valley is the Arrowhead, a natural landmark easily seen near the base of the San Bernardino moun- tains. The Arrowhead is 1,115 feet in length and 396 feet in width. Though the outline is so perfect it may appear to be artificial or man-made, the phe- Unique activities for visitors have always been a part of San Bernardino's allure. Back in the early 1900s stars of stage and screen frequented the vari- ous natural hot springs and resorts in San Bernardino. The Arrowhead Resort Hotel (now home to Campus Crusade for Christ) was located right at the base of the San Bernardino moun- tains. The hot springs were very popu- ~ lar and were famous for their relaxing _ _ __ effect and therapeutic benefits. San Bernardino County Museum ~'-'- >-~1iiiI PAGE 5 , ~ namenon is, in fact, natural. Many legends exist about the Arrowhead. The most ancient legend, perhaps, is one handed down from the Indians. The story goes that the Great Spirit had an arrow, which, like the Israelite's Pillar of Fire, was to guide them to the spot where they were to live. The Great Spirit having selected the place, fixed the arrow to mark it forever. Hmm . . . Special Events Back in 1911 San Bernardino hosted the first official Nation- al Orange Show, a citrus fair. Since that time the Orange Show has grown each year and is one of the premier annual events in South- ern California. Today, San Bernardino is also the home of the Renaissance Pleasure Faire, which is produced each year by the Living History Centre, a non-profit educational organization. Spring of 1991 will see this unique special event relive history for the 29th consecutive year. The Faire is held at Glen Helen Regional Park. It is a reenactment of an authentic and historically accurate 16th century market and festival. San Bernardino has a unique din- ing history. The city itself was named after Saint Bernardine of Siena, who is honored on the Catholic Feast Day, May 20. Welcomed guests shouldn't worry though, any day is a feasting day in San Bernardino! Maurice and Richard McDonald knew this when they opened the very first McDonald's at 14th and 'E' streets in San Bernardi- no in 1940. Hamburgers were $.1 S and an order of fries was a dime! Dining IS still quite affordable in our fine city and you'll find a rich diversity in ethnic cuisine as well as the traditional dining experience. Hospitality Lane, or "Restaurant Row" as it is often called, is a great place to start. There are over twenty-five restaurants of all types lining the & Lt Entertainment Interior oIVen Dome Bar, north side of Third Street, between 'D' and 'E' streets- /898 street. Highland Avenue is also home to a number of restaurants featuring a variety of ethnic cuisines. Evening entertainment ranges from live music and dancing to comedy shows at one of our downtown restau- rants, the New City Cafe. Explore and sample the tantalizing tastes for your- self. L " !I ~ (~ Ontario International Airport 1989 Annual Report " ;1 [I 'I II 5.3 Million Passengers. 284,988 Tons of Cargo. $3.5 Billion Economic Impact. 'J PASSENGER INFORMA TJON NO TAXES FOR ONT ONT'S FUTURE Travelers planning to use ONT in 1990 should arrive at the airport one hour before nighttime. It's also a good idea to park in Lot A, the airport's reduced- rate, long-term parking 101. Onwio Airport is not run with local or Slate laXes, but rather generates its own revenue through leases, landing fees and concession fees. On the other hand, ONT conlribwes more than $200 million in Iaxes each year to local government. ONT's future looks 10 be complex and busy. Noise studies, Environmenlal Impact Reports, agreements with airlines, the sale of bonds, aircraft operational capacity and local community support must be addressed before construction on ONT's new passenger facility can begin.
