"But here contentment
should reign,for they
who dwell within
the shadow of her
mountains, beneath the
sunlight of her skies can
say in truth, there is no
fairer spot on earth than
San Bernardino Valley."
-Rev. Father Juan Cahalleria,
/902 from Hi~t011J of
San Bernardino Valle\'
.
History
Indians originally occupied the
San Bernardino Valley. Two of
the major documented tribes in
the early 1800s were the Serra-
nos and the Cahuilla Indians. Existing
evidence indicates that Indian tribes
may have dwelled in the San
Bernardino Valley for more than 4000
years. Hikers can still take a trip to the
Lake Arrowhead area and explore the
Indian mortars at a site called Rock
Camp.
Missionary - From 1819 to 1821
San Bernardino went through a Mis-
sionary period. The area was actually
an outpost for the San Gabriel Mis-
sion. During this time missionaries
established a rancho, and later an
Asistencia Mission where local Indian
tribes were encouraged to come to
learn how to plant and irrigate crops.
Today, a reconstructed version of the
original Asistencia is located on Bar-
ton Road in Red lands.

major gold rush. Holcomb Val-
ley was one of the largest gold
findings in Southern California.
Miners poured into the moun-
tains through San Bernardino in
search of their fortune. For a
time, Belleville, a mining town
in Holcomb Valley, was the
largest city in Southern Califor-
nia with 10,000 residents. To-this
day the main gold "vein" has yet
to be discovered. The Valley
remains much the same today
and gold is still found by "week-
end miners" who make the trek
with their pans and equipment.
Rail - The railroads made
their arrival to San Bernardino in
the 1880s. San Bernardino was
changed from a sleepy town to
an enterprising city. In 1883 the
Southern Pacific arrived in
Colton, and in 1885, the Santa Fe
completed its line through the
Cajon Pass into the city itself. By
the 1890s San Bernardino was
becoming an important trade
Ranchero era from 1942 to 1951.
Life on the rancheros revolved
around the raising of cattle.
Accounts of life on the Spanish
ranchos stress hospitality of the
people, fiestas and rodeos.
The Mormons - A Mormon
contingent of 500 settled in San
Bernardino in 1851. Three years
later in 1854, the city was officially
incorporated. The population at
that time was 1200 including 900
Mormons. In 1857 approximately
sixty percent of the Mormons were
called back to Utah by Brigham
Young.
Gold! In 1860 William F. Hol-
comb filed five gold claims in an
area now known as Holcomb Val-
ley. Holcomb's claim resulted in a

center and railroad town.
History buffs would enjoy a visit to
San Bernardino's History Walk, locat-
ed at Seccombe Lake Park. Prominent
people and significant events are
commemorated on thirty bronze
plaques along a lovely brick walkway.
And for those Route 66 fans, don't
miss the curious Wigwam Motel on
the north side of Foothill Boulevard,
one of the remaining relics of the 66
era. San Bernardino was made quite
famous by all of the excitement of the
"Mother Road". The Route still exists
and passes through the city on its way
to Santa Monica where it ends.
Attractions & Activities
San Bernardino County Regional
Parks operates eleven different recre-
ational facilities. You'll find everything
from hiking, fishing and camping to
horseback riding. One of the parks is
home to the famous Calico Ghost
i~
Town where remnants of mining days
of old California can still be seen.
Take a tour and explore "Maggie's
Mining Company" and "Hank's
Hotel". The town is home to a variety
of unique gift shops and restaurants.
From the late 1920s until WWII San
Bernardino was known as the preview
capitol of the world for major Holly-
wood production "sneak previews".
Many famed Hollywood stars includ-
ing Clark Gable, Spencer Tracy, Joan
Crawford and Jean Harlow are known
to have attended the previews. The
California Theatre of Performing Arts
was one of the venues for such show-
ings. Today the California Theatre still
stands in all of its glory. Originally
opened in 1928, the theatre is now
maintained and operated by the San
Bernardino Civic Light Opera Associa-
tion, whose star-studded Broadway
plays and musicals light up the stage
for thousands of guests each year.
One of the most famous attractions
in the Inland Valley is the Arrowhead,
a natural landmark easily seen near
the base of the San Bernardino moun-
tains. The Arrowhead is 1,115 feet in
length and 396 feet in width. Though
the outline is so perfect it may appear
to be artificial or man-made, the phe-
Unique activities for visitors
have always been a part of
San Bernardino's allure. Back
in the early 1900s stars of
stage and screen frequented the vari-
ous natural hot springs and resorts in
San Bernardino. The Arrowhead
Resort Hotel (now home to Campus
Crusade for Christ) was located right at
the base of the San Bernardino moun-

namenon is, in fact, natural. Many
legends exist about the Arrowhead.
The most ancient legend, perhaps, is
one handed down from the Indians.
The story goes that the Great Spirit
had an arrow, which, like the
Israelite's Pillar of Fire, was to guide
them to the spot where they were to
live. The Great Spirit having selected
the place, fixed the arrow to mark it
forever. Hmm . . .
Special Events
Back in 1911 San Bernardino
hosted the first official Nation-
al Orange Show, a citrus fair.
Since that time the Orange
Show has grown each year and is one
of the premier annual events in South-
ern California.
Today, San Bernardino is also the
home of the Renaissance Pleasure
Faire, which is produced each year by
the Living History Centre, a non-profit
educational organization. Spring of
1991 will see this unique special event
relive history for the 29th consecutive
year. The Faire is held at Glen Helen
Regional Park. It is a reenactment of
an authentic and historically accurate
16th century market and festival. Toast

of its kind."
the Queenl Feast! Applaud spirited

"
San Bernardino is the site for vari-
ous other special events each year
such as the Route 66 Rendezvous, the
Inland Empire Soap Box Derby Races,
and the United States Motorcycle
Grand Prix. It is also the national
headquarters of the Western Regional
Little League Championships.

Famous law-man, Wyatt Earp,
and his family came to the San
Bernardino Valley from Iowa in
1 B64 in a wagon train led by
his father Nicholas Earp. Surprisingly,
Nicholas Earp's description of the area
remains fairly accurate. These pleasur-
able amenities are still here to be
enjoyed.
Most tourists are quite familiar with
the major attractions of California. But
what of those out-of-the-way, "off-the-
beaten-path" treasures that the Gold-
en State has kept as its own secret?
Travelers looking for something differ-
ent, a twist to the normal Southern
California itinerary, will
find San Bernardino has
a back-yard full of hid-
den secrets. Come and
explore with us some of
those lesser known, but
much adored treasures.

The San Bernardino Mountains offer a resort par-
adise second-to-none, home to famous stars, past and
present. The San Bernardino National Forest provides
unlimited opportunities for outdoor recreation. The
quaint town of Oak Glen has a number of apple farms
and orchards where U-pick programs flourish annually.
A day can easily be filled meandering up the winding
road to Oak Glen and its unique village areas. Stop at
the Oak Tree Village, and don't forget to get a fresh
slice of apple pie at the Los Rios Ranch Bakery.
Mmmm!
Southern California is also proud of its Temecula
Valley wineries. Just a short drive from San Bernardi-
no are eleven vineyards and wineries where award
winning vintage wines have been produced for many
years. Tasting and tours are conducted daily. Browse
the beautiful gift shops and bring a picnic lunch to
enjoy!
San Bernardino is also host to many fantastic and
unique annual special events such as the Renaissance
Pleasure Faire, the National Orange Show, and the
nostalgic Route 66 Rendevouz (see special event cal-
endar for dates and additional listings).
The I ist of attractions goes on as does the del ight of
welcomed guests who add a unique San Bernardino
Valley twist to their Southern California vacation. And

SCENIC OAK GLEN WELCOMES YOU!
Scenic Oak Glen, the Southland's largest mile-high
apple growing region, offers visitors a rare opportunity to
enjoy the beauty of the four seasons in a quaint, rustic
atmosphere. Spring is celebrated at the "Apple Blossom
Festival" in April. lilacs and daffodils as well as apple
blossoms blanket the Glen in fragrant pastels. The
summer temperature is 10 to 15 degrees cooler in the
Glen than in the Valleys below. Visitors sit under the
giant oak trees, pick plump sweet raspberries, stroll
through the animal park, browse the unique shops,
picnic or eat at the 'Country' style restaurants and relax.
As the leaves begin to turn gold, orange, yellow and red,
the agriculture star of the Fall makes its appearance at the
"Harvest Festival": Oak Glen Apples. There are 25
varieties of apples grown in the Glen and visitors are
invited to sample, U-pick or purchase at apple sheds.
Winter blankets the Glen in white, glistening snow,
creating Christmas card-like settings.
Whether it's fresh apples or cider, a slice of apple pie,
shopping, picnicking, romping in the snow, or just a slice
of country, Oak Glen has something for everyone all year
around.
For more information on year 'round activities in the
Glen, call Oak Tree Village at (714) 797-4020. For

In San Bernardino we find old
fashioned hospitality, a little per-
sonal attention and just plain
good food bring back valued
customers.
San Bernardino has a unique din-
ing history. The city itself was named
after Saint Bernardine of Siena, who is
honored on the Catholic Feast Day,
May 20. Welcomed guests shouldn't
worry though, any day is a feasting
day in San Bernardino! Maurice and
Richard McDonald knew this when
they opened the very first McDonald's
at 14th and 'E' streets in San Bernardi-
no in 1940. Hamburgers were $.1 S
and an order of fries was a dime!
Dining IS still quite affordable in
our fine city and you'll find a rich
diversity in ethnic cuisine as well as
the traditional dining experience.
Hospitality Lane, or "Restaurant Row"
as it is often called, is a great place to
start. There are over twenty-five
restaurants of all types lining the
&
Lt
Entertainment
Interior oIVen Dome Bar, north side of Third Street, between 'D' and 'E' streets- /898
street. Highland Avenue is also home
to a number of restaurants featuring a
variety of ethnic cuisines.
Evening entertainment ranges from
live music and dancing to comedy
shows at one of our downtown restau-
rants, the New City Cafe. Explore and
sample the tantalizing tastes for your-
self.

The San Bernardino City Unified School District, one of the fastest
growing in California, covers 120 square miles and has a student popula~
tion approaching 40,000. The district's philosophy is to concentrate on
basic subjects and to maintain high standards. By maintaining high stan-
dards at all levels, teachers are reporting a steady improvement in achieve.
ment and this is also borne out by rising scores on standardized tests. A
variety of magnet programs - health sciences, fine arts, environmental edu-
cation and technology, to name a few - are meeting the needs of all our
youngsters. San Bernardino City Schools are blessed with the enthusiastic
support of its business community. The Communications Office hosts an
annual tour of several campuses. Please call 381 -1250 and ask to be

Transportation
Back in 1858, regularly sched-
uled horse-drawn stagecoach
service traveled between Los
Angeles and San Bernardino.
In 1883, the first train steamed into
San Bernardino. The Santa Fe route
went through San Bernardino and
eventually connected with the Trans-
Continental. The Santa Fe Railroad
has provided a major artery for travel
into San Bernardino ever since.

Travelers seeking the

HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN!
Low FARESAKD IBTS OF FUGHTSARE BACK. Ah, the good old days. A litde upstart airline brought a
smile to California faces. And something Virtually unheard of: Low fares and lots of flights. Alas, in time, a big
airline swallowed up the litde guy. Fares went up, flights went down and the smiles faded. That was
then, this is now. A spunky 19-year-old airline named Southwest is once again giving California something to
smile about: Low fares and lots of flights, on the newest fleet of jet aircraft in America. More good news.
Now you can fly Southwest Airlines for our low unrestricted AnyTime Fares~ Good any time you want to fly.
And for people who can plan a little in advance, Southwest Airlines has super low Fun Fares~
There's even a frequent flyer program called The Company Club~ with something else unheard of-
frequent awards. So smile. California. Happy days are here again!

free movies and programs including
magicians, puppet shows, Halloween
Happening and other festive events!
.
While our California Room is dedicated
to local history and genealogy, our
state-of-the-art Computer Lab is the
only one of its kind in the area with 30
computers, software and an electronic
bulletin board to serve every personal
and business need. We also have one of
the area's most dynamic and successful
Adult Literacy programs.
Currently, the Friends of the San
Bernardino Public Library are conduct-
ing the Great Expectations fundraiser to
raise $300,000 for new books. A year
long celebration will soon begin for the
Library's Centennial in December,
1991. There will also be a Fiesta in
the summer, 1991 to celebrate the 25th
Anniversary of the Paul Villasenor
Branch Library.

NO TAXES FOR ONT
ONT'S FUTURE
Travelers planning to use ONT in 1990
should arrive at the airport one hour
before nighttime. It's also a good idea
to park in Lot A, the airport's reduced-
rate, long-term parking 101.
Onwio Airport is not run with local or
Slate laXes, but rather generates its own
revenue through leases, landing fees
and concession fees. On the other hand,
ONT conlribwes more than $200 million
in Iaxes each year to local government.
ONT's future looks 10 be complex and
busy. Noise studies, Environmenlal
Impact Reports, agreements with airlines,
the sale of bonds, aircraft operational
capacity and local community support
must be addressed before construction
on ONT's new passenger facility can
