This is a most wonder- ful opportunity for the youth of San Bernardino to learn so much about drug education. Cost for this conference is $325 per student. This organiza- tion is requesting $9,750.00 in order to send 30 students to this 4 day conference at Pepperdine University in Malibu. There are many more students who would like to go, and who need to go, but funds are limited. With your help, we will send as many students as we possible can. The best money spent is for drug educationl The youth who do attend this July Youth to Youth Conference will be able to staff the tentatively scheduled Mini Youth to Youth Conference to be held in San Bernardino in September of 1990. This will continue to make our drug-free youth grow in numbers. If you would like any more information, please call my office and I will be glad to answer any questions or concerns. My main concern at this time is getting the money in to send the students, and getting the paper work in on time, so this is a pretty urgent matter that needs immediate attention. Your serious consideration would be greatly appreciated. DRUG USE IS ~ ~'J 234 North ArrowtMJclQ.Avenue. Son Bernardino. California 92408 714/885-0509 or 714/889-3565 ~'2: WHAT IS YOUTH TO YOUTH The' comprehensive prevention approach referred to is the .ethod Youth to Youth has chosen to employ since its inception. Youth to Youth originated in 1982 in ColUmbus, Ohio, with the goal of supporting and encouraging teens to be drug-free. This very positive prevention program is sponsored by CompDrug, a private, nonprofit treatment and prevention agency. Unlike many prevention programs, Youth to Youth takes a strong stand against alcohol and other drugs by advocating a "totally drug-free" message. There are no "responsible use- messages because teens are often left confused by their vagueness. A strong definite message that it is Okay to say -NO" provides teens with the option of choosing a drug-free lifestyle. Many teenagers have chosen this lifestyle and, with the support that Youth to Youth provides, have influenced others to make the same choice. By using peer pressure in this positive way, and making the choice to be drug free a positive and attractive decision, there is no need to co.promise this position. It has proven to be quite successful. . Youth involvment is another important component of the Youth to Youth philosophy. The time has come to actively involve youth in prevention programming. In Youth to Youth, the meetings and various activities are run and organized by the youth. Teens can make a definite difference. They are Willing and able to contribute useful, creative ideas and an abundance of energy as well as take responsibility for prevention programs that affect their peers. Youth to youth provides teens with the chance to contribute to the so~ution in an environment where adults merely facilitate and s~pport their efforts. This is the third year for Youth to Youth to do a Western States Conference in Southern California and San Bernardino Co..unity Against Drugs, Inc. is proud to be a part of this project in supporting this event by assistance in the sponsorship of our youth of this community. , SBLECTION PROCESS OF CHOOSING STUDENTS (HIDDLB SCHOOL AND HIGH SCHOOL)' , , YOUTH TO YOUTH CONFERENCE July 4-8, 1990 P!pperdine University, Halibu, California -~ """Will be contacting interest. working with the Unified School District as well as the private schools to see if they have an 1.
