December 13, 1989
Honorable Mayor and Common Council
city of San Bernardino
300 North "0" Street
San Bernardino, CA 92418
Dear Mayor and Council:
At its meeting of December 8, 1989, the Senior
commission unanimously adopted the following motion
to the City utility Tax:
Affairs
relative
"The Senior Affairs Commission recommends that the City
Council raise the exemption threshold, as provided in
Municipal Code 297, for the City utility Tax, from $9,000 to
$10,000 for single persons and from $12,000 to $14,000 for
married couples or families; and further that the effort to
promote the exemption be improved to ensure that all eligible
citizens have an opportunity to participate".
The Commission is very concerned that many senior citizens on
fixed incomes are severely impacted by the existing thres-
holds. Furthermore, the Commission believes that many
seniors who are eligible, are not aware of the exemption.
Promotion of the exemption through notices on utility bills,
press releases and cable television would greatly help in
making citizens aware of this program.
The Mayor and Common Council is respectfully requested to
consider this matter.
Sincerely,
~~
