Dr. Cecilia Salazar Parrenas is a native of the Philippines. She attended the Philippine
Normal University and the National Teachers College in the Philippines. She first came
to the United States as a postdoctoral fellow in psycholinguistics at Boston University.
She was a faculty member of De La Salle University Graduate School of Education in
Manila, Philippines. Her family later returned to the United States when her husband, Dr.
Florante Parrenas, as a member of the Bishops-Businessmen's Conference on Social
Responsibility, had authored a book critical of the Marcos government, was almost
arrested for "rumor-mongering". Granted political asylum, Dr. Cecilia Parrenas has been
a San Bernardino resident since 1986 when she was recruited by the San Bernardino City
Unified School District. In 1991, Dr. Parrenas received the Monte Award for Most
Outstanding Elementary School Educator. Currently, she works as an educational
consultant on administration, planning and social policy.
