CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Staff Report
Subiect:
Resolution of the Mayor and Common Council authorizing the Mayor or her designee to apply
for and administer a grant from the Meacham Foundation for the Animal Shelter's Cat Building
Renovation Project
Back2round:
The City has budgeted to spend $75,000 to renovate the cat building at the Animal Shelter this
fiscal year. A renovated interior with a new HV AC and air exchange system will greatly
enhance the health and welfare of cats at the shelter, and increase their chance for adoption. This
project is currently in the bidding phase.
The Mecham Foundation Grant is administered by the American Humane Association. Meacham
Foundation Grants are only awarded for construction, capital improvements, physical
improvements or equipment that directly impacts the welfare of animals in shelters. The
maximum grant award is $4,000 and is due no later than February 28, 2005.
The division is seeking authorization to apply for a grant of $4,000 from this foundation. If
awarded, the grant will allow for the purchase of 16 stainless steel cat cages for the new isolation
and treatment area within the renovated cat building. These new cages will replace older ones
that cannot be used in the newly designed building. If the grant is not approved, the department
will attempt to raise the funds locally.
Financial Impact:
No matching funds are required for this grant. If awarded, the grant will provide $4,000 for
additional cat cages in the new cat building.
Recommendation:
