CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Staff Report
Subject: Route 66 Marathon @ Resolution
Background: IMPROVE, a community 501 non-profit organization that is
dedicated to improving health and well-being of citizens,
approached the Mayor about their plan to start a regional Route 66
Marathon that would be headquartered in the City of San
Bernardino and to attract national and international runners.
Mayor Valles, a marathon runner, agreed to support the concept
and is asking the City Council to approve the resolution. This resolution
would name us as the headquarter City, and begin the community planning
process that would be spearheaded by IMPROVE, with an organizing
committee that would address all the professional runner and sponsor
associations to assure that the event is first-class, and meets all the criteria
for success. The Marathon will partner with neighboring cities on historic
Route 66 and is targeted for 2007 debut as an annual tourism event.
Financial Impact: None at this time.
Recommendation Approve the resolution.
