CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO - REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION
Staff Report
Subject
Resolution ratifying the submittal of a grant application by the Director of Parks, Recreation and
Community Services for Mervyn's 2004 Community Giving Program to assist with youth
mentoring services.
Background
The Mentoring Program was established in April of 1995 as a project of the Mayor's Youth Task
Force. The initial funding came from the City and the San Bernardino City Unified School
District as a partoership to provide both mentoring and the Late Night Hoops Program. After
this initial funding, the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department pursued grant
funding to sustain the mentoring program as follows:
. Community Challenge Grant (FOCUS) - 1997 to present
. Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Grant (JUMP) - 1997 to 2000
. California Endowment Grant - 2000 to 2002
Because of the cuts in State funding for grants that have sustained the Mentoring Program in the
past, the Department is seeking out other sources of funding such as this grant from the
Mervyo's 2004 Community Giving Program in the amount of $2,500 to assist in continuing the
Mentoring Program. The attached grant application was completed and submitted to Mervyn's
in order to meet their May 31, 2004 deadline. This grant will fund salary and benefits of the
Mentoring Coordinator for 3 weeks, as we await the decision of other grant application
opportunities.
Financial Impact
There will be no general fund cost to the City and there is no grant match. If awarded, this grant
of $2,500 will assist in operating the mentoring program as the department seeks other funding
opportunities during the FY 2004-05.
Recommendation
Adopt Resolution.
