Sister City Commemorates Anniversary
With Gift of Ancient Crown Replica
SAN BERNARlNO, California - Two representatives of the mayor of Goyang, Republic of
Korea visited city hall this week to present a gift from the people of Goyang to the people of San
Bernardino.
Mayor's Assistant Young II Ahn and International Affairs Director Jeong Lirn Gye
traveled from Goyang and join a delegation of members of the Korean American Association of
the Inland Empire lead by President Tae Young Byun to make the presentation during today's
city council meeting.
The gift, a replica of a 1,600-year-old gold crown from the Silla Dynasty of Korea,
commemorates the first anniversary of the signing of a Sister City agreement by the Honorable
Mayor Hyun Suk Kang of Goyang and San Bernardino Mayor Judith Valles. The signing
ceremony took place in the San Bernardino City Hall July 30, 2003.
"We are honored that Mayor Kang and the people of Goyang would choose to bestow
such a beautiful gift to commemorate our Sister City relationship," said Mayor Valles.
San Bernardino City Council Members Gordon McGinnis and Neil Derry were the guests
of Goyang two years ago.
Goyang is the newest of San Bernardino's II Sister Cities, which include: Tachikawa,
Japan; Villahermosa, Mexico; Mexicali, Mexico; Tauranga, New Zealand; lie Ife, Nigeria; Kigali,
Rwanda; Herzliya, Israel; Zavolzhije, Russia; Roxas, Philippines and Yushu, China. Sister City
volunteers work to foster relations between their cities that focus on cultural, medical,
environmental, professional, educational and economic development.
The Goyang/San Bernardino relationship involves an education program wherein
students from Goyang spend time each summer learning English and American culture at
California State University, San Bernardino.
Four San Bernardino high school students are currently visiting Tachikawa, Japan as part
of that Sister City relationship's annual student exchange program. The people of Tachikawa
raised $20,000 for San Bernardino fire relief.
