BrOGRAPHrCAL SKETCH
Louis Fernandez Is currently the Provost and Vice PresIdent for Academic Affairs at
California State University, san Bernardino (CSUSB). Dr. Fernandez received his
Bachelor of ScIence degree In Geology from the Oty College of New York, a Master of
Science degree from the University of Tulsa and his Ph.D. from Syracuse University.
Upon completing the requirements for his Ph.D., Dr. Fernandez spent three years as a
Post- Doctoral Researcher at Yale University where he wori<ed on petrologic problems,
Including studies on Apollo 11 and 12 lunar samples.
After his Post-Doctoral appointment, Dr. Fernandez joined the faculty of the University
of New Orleans (UNO) as an Asslstant Professor of Geology. He spent 20 years at
UNO where he taught, did research and served in a variety of adminlstratlve positions.
His research was focused principally on volcanic rocks that make up the SIerra Madre
OccIdental of Mexico. In his last six years at UNO, Dr. Fernandez served as the Dean
of the College of ScIence, a position he held untll he moved to San Bernardino to
assume the position of Dean of the School of Natural Sciences. In 1994, he was
appointed Provost and Vice PresIdent for Academic Affairs at CSUSS.
Throughout his career, Dr. Fernandez has served on a number of university and
national committees whose focus was to increase opportunities for minorities and
women in the geosciences. In addition to serving on the National Science
Foundation's Advisory Committee to the Earth Sciences, he has chaired: The
American Geological Institutes Minority Partidpatlon Program Advisory Committee; The
Geological Society of America's Ad Hoc Committee on MInorities; and the national
Associatlon of Geology Teacher's Minority Scholarship Program.
In April of this year, the Hispanic Caucus of the American Association for Higher
Education (AAHE) awarded Louis Fernandez the Outstanding SUpport of Hispanic
Issues in Higher Education Award for 2004. This award is given to an indMdualln the
community who has demonstrated outstanding accompfishment and support of
Hispanic Issues.

12102-Present FAME (Families of African American Ancestry Manifesting our Excellence) Program
Community Consultant Position. The program synthesizes Traditional African Dance and
Nutrition Awareness to combat obesity in the African-American community of San Bernardino
County. Responsible for originating key concepts that are a basis of the programs Nutrition and
Physical Activity Curriculum
Key Responsibilities:
· Training: Conducted training for staff, to teach them choreography, get them adjusted to the
teaching environment,
· Anticipated potential barriers to the success of the project and strategized methods to
neutralize these barriers.
· Assessed and evaluated how the FAME project has increased local capacity of the African
American community to have access to/ increase fruit and vegetable intake and be physically
active each day.
. Developed a:
o Nutrition based dance curriculum (8 to 10 lessons) for youth 6 to 14 years old that
meets sate standards (adaptable age groups) accompanied by a teaching manual;
o Video that teaches all aspects of the choreography/nutrition and dance
. Assisted FAME in connecting with community service, and faith based organizations that
would be supportive ofthe project (i.e. sororities/fraternities, service clubs, student clubs,
etc.)
· Used Community Based Social Marketing concepts as the template when conceptualizing
methods for accomplishing work-plan objectives and activities
· Connected the FAME project to existing micro/macro events within the community (i.e.
Black History Month event possibilities, African Village at the National Orange Show, and
the City Of San Bernardino 4th Of July Parade)
· Connected with local television media to cover project activities and air the FAME video.
2002
"Gone too Soon": Anti smoking program: African American Youth Community Based Program.
Educating the community about the hazards of smoking. The components of the program included
educational awareness and using the arts as a vehicle for demonstrating that there are other more
constructive outlets for youthful energy besides engaging in this destructive, addictive habit.
1996
"Dreams Do Come True": Inspirational Youth Community Based Program
Offering affordable performing arts classes in South Central Los Angeles, California. The purpose
of this program was to showcase inner city talent while building self-esteem through participation
in performing arts based activities that are normally not offered in this community.
1994
"Lean On Me": Hand Heloing Hand Program
Developed to facilitate bond formation between youth/peers. The focus was on teaching and
encouraging youth to provide positive support for each other. Anger management, conflict
resolution and other life skills techniques were peer mediation methods and techniques were
shared with the youth to cultivate a more positive progressive attitude in the youth towards
themselves and each other.

"Gone Too Soon": Taking time to appreciate the gifts of life before thev are gone
Educating the community about appreciating life. Performing Arts was used as a way of helping
youth to learn discipline and perseverance, consistency and diligence and as a means for
developing a deeper intuitive sense for discriminating between a) what's good for them and b)
what's not; and subsequently acting on that realization by appreciating and maximizing those daily
things that defined their existence in a positive way.
