HIGH/SCOPE CURRICULUM
San Bernardino County Preschool Senices Department (Head Start) uses the High/Scope
Cognitively Oriented Curriculum, which has been studied and reJinedfor more than 25 years.
The High/Scope model is concerned with all aspects of deHlopment, including language,
physical, social, emotional, intellectual; and creati~'e self-expression.
The wrriculur.l provides an appropriate balance beMeen child-initiated and adult-initiat,'d
activities. For a large part of each day, children choose what they will do. BeJore they begin..
they repres"fnt their plans in some way--perhaps through language ("I'm going to the block
area today to build a ship") or drawing a picture or even pantomime. Children then carry out
their plans, interacting with both people and materials in the learning environment as "work".
Children usually decide }i'hen they ha.'e completed one plan and are ready to make a new one.
..1t the end of work time (as the large block of child-choice time is cal!ed in HighlS::ope).
children retl/Tn to their small groups to recall something important about their experiences.
Again using language, art, drama, and other means of self-expression.. children describe what
they did, how they solved a problem, or hOe; they felt as they ~rorked and played together.
Each step in this plan-do-reriew sequence is carefully designed to address the developmental
1/uds flnd interests of young children. As children carry out their plans, the teaching team
obsenes each child and waits for the opportune moment to interact or enrich Hze learning
experiences the child has created for himself.
III additioll to the plall-do-review sequence, a typical day also includes individual, small, a':!!
large group cctivities designed by the teacher. Howerer, e~'eIl teacher-initiated actil'itio
pro ride many and mried opportunities for children to make choices and sol,'e problems fllT
themselres.
III the High/Scope Curriculum, basic academic skills become matters of pasonal concern fer
young children as they are integrated into children's self-initiated acti,'ities. Thus, writing and
pre-reading skills become a natural part of planning and recall time awl carly math concepts
are used to solre problems encountered in eHryday play situations.
Each day at Head Start includes m'any challenges and mallY opportunities for sucass.
Therefore, children leam to feel confident and competent. H'hat a fimz foundation faT l({,-
