RESOLUTION NO, 91-98
2 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO OPPOSING THE
ESTABLISHMENT OF A FEDERAL PRISON AT NORTON AIR FORCE BASE.
3
WHEREAS, Norton Air Force Base, located within the City of
4
San Bernardino, is projected for closure, and
5
WHEREAS, the City in cooperation with other neighboring
6
cities has proposed a development of Norton Air Force Base to
7
provide commercial, industrial and residential uses and needed
8
public services to the area, and
9
WHEREAS, such development located close to commercial areas
of the City would provide an economic stimulus, including new
jobs, trade, housing and industrial potential, and
WHEREAS, the City is informed that consideration is now
being given to the use of Norton Air Force Base as a federal
prison, and
WHEREAS, such a prison near the commercial areas of the
community would generate a negative impact on the City and its
economic growth, and would not be in the best interest of the
community or its citizens,
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COMMON
COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO that the City of
San Bernardino does hereby strongly oppose the siting of a
federal prison at Norton Air Force Base, and urges that plans for
the beneficial use of the location by the local cities be allowed
to continue.
