HomeMy WebLinkAbout1993-213 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 RESOLUTION NO. 93-213 RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO HEREBY ENCOURAGE OUR GOVERNOR AND STATE REPRESENTATIVES TO STRONGLY CONSIDER THE SEVERE EFFECTS THIS CUT IN SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME BENEFITS WILL HAVE ON THE LESS FORTUNATE IN OUR COMMUNITY, AND THAT THESE CUTS BE REMOVED FROM THE BUDGET. WHEREAS, many Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients are struggling to live independently; and WHEREAS, these individuals may have mental or physical challenges that preclude them from obtaining gainful employment, and thus they rely heavily on SSI as their only source of income; and WHEREAS, the average income of SSI recipients who qualify as "Independent Living" clients who are responsible for finding their own housing and taking care of their own financial affairs is approximately $650.00 per month, with the majority of these benefits going toward housing; and WHEREAS, the Governor I s budget proposes to cut the benefits to Living" "Independent beneficiaries by 19 approximately $20.00, which is a tremendous burden on such a 20 limited income; and 21 WHEREAS, such a cut would mean that in many cases, the 22 disabled would not have enough money for food at the end of 23 the month, and may add more people to the already swelling 24 ranks of the homeless in our communities. 25 Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Mayor and Common 26 Council of the City of San Bernardino does hereby encourage 27 our Governor and State Representatives, to strongly consider 28 RES 93-213 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 # 4 RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO HEREBY ENCOURAGE OUR GOVERNOR AND STATE REPRESENTATIVES TO STRONGLY CONSIDER THE SEVERE EFFECTS THIS CUT IN SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME BENEFITS WILL HAVE ON THE LESS FORTUNATE IN OUR COMMUNITY, AND THAT THESE CUTS BE REMOVED FROM THE BUDGET. the severe effects this cut in Supplemental Security Income benefits will have on the less fortunate in our community, and that these cuts be removed from the budget.
