Sucplement #1 98-285 HIS TOR Y The western Region, one of sixteen, includes the states of california Arizona, and Nevada. These states ere divided into Districts; five in california, one in Arizona, and Southern Neveda, which is included in the San Bernerdino-Riverside Counties District. Each District is headed by a District Director. The first western Regional auditions were held in the 1956-1957 season, when the region was added to the Council's National Program. Mario and Ruth Chamlee, who for many years were on the rostar of principals stars. of the Metro- politan Opera, were asked to undertake the task of organizing the Region. They asked Miss Gwendolyn Roberts to work with them to assist in setting up the structure for the Auditions. The first Auditions were held on December 7, 8, 14, 15, 1957, in Hancock Auditorium of the University of Southern California. The Finals were held in Santa Barbara at the Music..Academy of the west. Hundreds of voices were heard and many fine voices were discovered. The first winners were Grece Bumbry, Mary Costa, end Alfred Jensen (deceased). The role of winning singers through the yeers includes some of the most out- standing singers of our time. In 1959-1960, Gwendolyn Roberts, was asked to form a District for San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, as well as to continue to serve on the Regional Auditions. This wae done and the Auditions have been held avery year since that time, under her supervisio~ and many fine singers have been given the opportunity to be_heard in tbismanner. Winners from the District are selected to proceed to the Regional Auditions where singers are selacted to go further in the National Auditions. A numbar of singers from this District have received further recognition: Armando Sierra, Tenor, went to the Region where he ~on and was sent to the National Auditions, winning an important Award; Karen Posten, Soprano, went on to sing with the New York City Opera; Mary Heyler, Mezzo-Soprano, won second and third place awards at the Regional Level; Della Dean, Soprano, won a substantial Scholar- ship at the Regional Level; Keven .Bell, Bass-Baritone, won the Regional Com- petition and was sent to the National Auditions, was a winner and sang on the stage of the Metropolitan, had a debut at the New York City Opere end is now singing a full schedule of leading roles with a number of opera companies; Alejandro Guerrero, has sung with the Inland Empire Symphony and ~ith the western Opera Theater. He returns to New York City Opera in Merch. Reed more about this in the extra sheet you heve been given with the progrem. Please reed carefully the list of singers and their professional activities which has been given to you today. We ars proud these singers end many others who are singing major engagements ncw. .Their cereers started here with these auditions and we want to give them support and encouragement. Miss RObertscontinuas to direct the Auditions in this District where she has secured community assistance and support for administration and for awards for the singers who are selected to be winners by the Judges who come from the Las Angeles Area to adjudicate the Auditions. Through the assistaoce of an excellent committee of enthusiastic support- ers, this program continues to grow to be a major edvantage. far our talented singers. .
