HomeMy WebLinkAbout1998-186 .. RESOLUTION NO. 98-186 1 2 3 4 RESOLUTION OF TIlE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO SUPPORTING TIlE REPEAL OF BOOKING FEES IN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY. WHEREAS, the State Legislators adopted Senate Bill 2557 in 1991 enabling counties to charge cities for the cost of booking prisoners; and 6 7 5 WHEREAS, Cities have been charged for booking fees by the County since 1991; and 8 WHEREAS, the imposition of booking fees was a necessity during a time of 9 spiraling costs and a sharp downturn in the local and state economies; and 10 11 12 13 14 15 WHEREAS, the economy has improved and it is believed that the trend will continue; and WHEREAS, some counties comparable to San Bernardino are eliminating booking fees at this time; and WHEREAS, the booking fee adversely affected law enforcement officers at the street level as some cities directed officers not to arrest on some misdemeanors or infractions; and WHEREAS, the elimination of booking fees would go a long way toward improving 16 relations with all of the cities in San Bernardino County; and 17 WHEREAS, the Sheriff of San Bernardino County has directed a letter to the 18 County Board of Supervisors requesting the elimination of booking fees; and 19 20 21 22 WHEREAS, the cities support the decision of the Sheriff and join him to encourage the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors to eliminate the payment of booking bees by cities in San Bernardino County. NOW, TIIEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Common Council of City of San Bernardino does support the elimination of booking fees and encourages the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors to discontinue booking fees. 23 III 24 25 26 27 28 III III June 19, 1998 1 Res 98-186 . ..
