OF SAN BERNARDINO IN SUPPORT OF SB 984 ESTABLISHING MARCH 31sT, CESAR CHAVEZ'S BIRTHDAY, AS A STATEWIDE HOLIDAY. Whereas, Cesar E. Chavez led a movement dedicated to improving the lives of those who toil in 1he fields of our nation, and, Whereas, Cesar E. Chavez led a five-year, non-violent boycott of grapes which led 10 monumental advancements, including the first labor contract for farm workers in the grape fields, the outlawing of the back breaking short handle hoe in 1975 and the passage of the Agricultural Labor Relations Act, which was the first law governing farm labor organizing in the continental United States, and, Whereas, in recognition of Cesar Chavez's ou1standing contribution to our country, in 1994, he was pos1humously awarded the nation's highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, by President Bill Clinton, and he was also inducted into the Labor Hall of Fame by the AFL-CIO, and, Whereas, Cesar E. Chavez's life exemplified the UFW slogan "Si Se Puede" and serves as a model for our youth, all Americans and citizens of the world with the message that organized ac1ion against economic and social injustice can win change, and, Whereas, State Sena10r Richard Polanco has introduced Senate Bill 984 into the California State Legislature which would establish March 3151, Cesar Chavez's birthday, as a s1atewide holiday to be observed by all public schools and community colleges and become a paid holiday for state employees, and, Whereas, the establishment of such a holiday would be a deserving recognition of the life of this outstanding Mexican-American labor leader, and also of the tremendous contribution to our state of both the United Farmworkers Union and the Mexican-American people. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO THAT THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO GOES ON RECORD IN SUPPORT OF SB 984.
