WHEREAS, today, only 13.3 percent of California is protecte wilderness; and WHEREAS, development threatens California's last remainin wild lands and rivers; and WHEREAS, in the last 20 years, 675,000 acres of unprotecte wilderness - approximately the size of Yosemite National Park have lost their wilderness character due to activities such as logging and mining; and WHEREAS, development of these wilderness places woul 13 threaten many animal and plant species, as well as endanger in 14 the drinking water of millions of Californians; and 15 WHEREAS, by designating over 2.5 million acres in 77 areas 16 as wilderness, and stretches of 22 rivers as wild, scenic, 0 17 recreational throughout California, this legislation woul 18 protect a diverse array of ecosystems; and 19 WHEREAS, this Bill would protect the sources of much of 20 California's drinking water and promote the recovery of 21 threatened and endangered species. 22 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Mayor and Commo 23 Council support The California wild Heritage Wilderness Act of 24 2002. 25 III 26 III 27 III 28 III . ~ T' 2002-309 1 RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY 0 SAN BERNARDINO IN SUPPORT OF THE CALIFORNIA WILD HERITAG 2 WILDERNESS ACT OF 2002, INTRODUCED BY SENATOR BARBARA BOXER. 3 I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was duly 4 adopted by the Mayor and Common Council of the City of San 5 Bernardino at a regular meeting thereof, held on the 23rd day 6 of September 2002, by the following vote to wit: 7 8 Council Members: AYES NAYS ABSTAIN ABSENT 9 ESTRADA X 10 LIEN X 11 MCGINNIS X -- 12 DERRY X 13 SUAREZ X 14 ANDERSON X 15 MCCAMMACK X 16 ~~~ 11.
